Hi, I am looking to control the Cycad Moth, blue-grey butterfly, which lays eggs in the newly emerging crown of the cycad. Is this the right product for me or should i use confidor etc? Flush has already started. I don't think this plant can handle another year of the leaves being destroyed. Andrew asked on 3 November 2025

Hey Andrew,
Contendor Systemic Insecticide 1L RTU (imidacloprid) is designed primarily for sucking insects such as aphids, scale, mealybugs, thrips, and whiteflies, but is not effective on chewing insect larvae like the cycad moth (blue-grey butterfly) caterpillars that damage cycad leaves. While systemic products like Confidor and Contendor can protect against sap-sucking pests, they are not recommended for controlling cycad blue butterfly larvae, which are the main cause of leaf destruction once eggs hatch and the flush is underway.

Use a specific caterpillar control spray (such as Dipel or Eco-Neem) applied to the newly emerging crown and soft flush.

Is it safe to use contendor systemic insecticide on citrus trees that are intended for fruit consumption? Jason Taylor asked on 13 April 2025

Hey Jason,
Contendor Systemic Insecticide, which contains the active ingredient Imidacloprid, is labeled for use on fruit trees, including citrus, to control sap-sucking pests. However, its safety for fruit consumption depends on proper application and adherence to label instructions.

Key considerations:

Systemic Nature: The insecticide is absorbed into the plant and moves throughout its system, potentially affecting the fruit if applied during active growth stages.

Waiting Period: The label or product guidelines should specify a waiting period between application and harvest to ensure any residues degrade to safe levels. Some systemic insecticides are considered safe for consumption after this period.

Precautions: It is often recommended to avoid applying systemic insecticides when fruit is actively growing or present on the tree. Removing existing fruit before application may be advised for safety.

Environmental Impact: Imidacloprid can harm pollinators like bees if applied during flowering.

While systemic insecticides like Contendor are approved for use on edible plants, some experts caution against consuming fruit from treated trees within the same season due to potential residue concerns. Always follow the product label instructions and consult local regulations for specific guidance.

How does Contender work on Azaleas Gil Hirst asked on 26 March 2025

Hey Gil,
Contendor Systemic Insecticide works effectively on Azaleas through its dual-action formula. When applied to Azaleas, the insecticide is absorbed through the foliage and moves throughout the plant's system. This systemic action allows the active ingredient, Imidacloprid, to be distributed internally, providing protection from the inside out.

For Azaleas specifically, Contendor targets the Azalea Lace Bug, a common pest that affects these plants

The insecticide works in two ways:

1. Systemic protection: As the plant absorbs the chemical, it becomes toxic to insects that feed on the plant tissue, including the Azalea Lace Bug

2. Contact action: The spray also works on contact with insects present on the plant's surface.

To use Contendor on Azaleas, apply the ready-to-use spray thoroughly on the foliage, including the undersides of leaves where pests often hide. For persistent infestations, you may need to repeat applications every 7 to 14 days.

It's important to note that Contendor should not be applied to Azaleas when they are in bloom, as it can be harmful to bees

Can you use this product on indoor tropical plants Kathleen Colligan asked on 15 March 2025

Hey Kathleen,
Contendor Systemic Insecticide can be used on tropical plants, but, you should avoid spraying Contendor indoors. If your plants need to be treated, our supplier recommends relocating the plants outside first, treating them, and then bringing them back inside once the solution has dried completely.

  1. I purchased the Contendor Spray for a mild mealy bug infestation on my Ballerina Apple tree. Despite following the instructions given to a “T” & using two entire spray containers and fully & carefully saturating the whole tree top to bottom twice (including under leaves), both times the mealy bug infestation came back worse after each treatment. I persisted with the second treatment thinking it might take more that one treatment to get the infestation under control, but unfortunately the spray had little effect on deterring the mealy bugs, it definitely did not kill them on contact and in fact after the second spray the infestation appeared worse that it had been before the very first spray. I ended up having to spot kill the bugs with isopropyl alchohol spray which fortunately has worked with no apparent harm to the tree.

  5. I am leaving another review. I bought many bottles of Contendor and spray our potted pine trees multiple times. (It is hard not to breathe it in, even when wearing P2 face mask). Giant conifer aphids were hardly deterred. Minor change but it’s unsustainable. They were like an army circling the perimeter of the pots and our trees suffered from fungal disease due to the sticky aphid residue. Not purchasing again. Also, the last batch I purchased had leaked all throughout the box, with no apology. I’m trying pellets on the soil which have great reviews.

  7. An absolute lifesaver for. our pine trees. Aphids multiply extremely quickly, reducing the leaves to sticks (in places) and taking over the plant. A thorough spray of Confidor kills them! Just spray leaves and give a second spray a few days later. The trees will be rid of aphids entirely. We have 7 pine trees (about 2m tall) and a 1Ltr bottle lasts the two sprays (aphid free for about 5 months). Totally worth it.

  8. My indoor plants have a spider mite problem that I’ve been tackling for weeks. This product definitely kills the buggers, but I’m finding I need to spray more often than directed. I have found that a thorough spray of the entire plant, followed by a spray of the soil every 3-5 days is the best way to control spider mites. Still haven’t been able to eradicate them but their numbers are getting smaller and smaller. Just requires VERY regular use of systemic insecticide.
