Hey Michael,
Yes, the lamp on the Executioner Bug Zapper - Large is the main attractant to lure bugs to the zapper, it should light up.
If yours is not, some common issues could be;
1. You have the zapper set to Auto mode, in this mode, the unit will only switch on when the light sensor on the top of the machine determines it's dark enough for night operation, it will not turn on during the day, or when light is present.
2. The globe could have come dislodged during transit, to fix this, remove the trap collection tray from the bottom of the device and undo a couple of screws to gain access to the bulb, try to reseat the globe and switch the unit on.

Hi Christian, Yes, the additional lighting sensor function on the Executioner Bug Zapper is optional. This feature allows the zapper to automatically turn on at dusk and off at dawn. However, you can also operate the unit manually, giving you the flexibility to turn it on or off as needed, regardless of the lighting conditions. This makes it convenient for various usage scenarios.

The Executioner Bug Zapper - Large is designed primarily for mosquitoes and moths, we haven't received any feedback regarding the effectiveness on European Wasps.
I don't think this unit would be ideal for that insect, as they're primarily active during the day, and wouldn't see the light from this unit as it would have to compete with natural sunlight to be visible.
For European wasps, we recommend the Vespex European Wasp Trap

Works really well. No more annoying buzzing in my ear at night when I’m trying to sleep. It’s really satisfying when I empty the catchment tray and find lots of mosquitoes in it! When a larger insect like a fly or moth gets caught in it, it makes a zapping sound and I actually saw a fly light up on fire in it once which had me a little worried as I use it indoors at night!
Received the bug zapper quickly and it works fantasically on mosquitoes and other flying insects. The first night I plugged it in it hardly stopped zapping. Next day the zapper container was half full of bugs. Very good bug zapper.
