    Hey Anne,
    The wire inside the Duke Mouse Trap is to apply bait to and to hold up the door for the trap, though this isn't strictly necessary with the design of the trap, as rodents can push the door open to access the bait inside, but are unable to push their way back out.

    Hey Anne,
    The Duke Mouse Trap does not require any assembly, and can be used straight out of the box.

    While there is a metal pole to balance the door on, the locking mechanism on this trap doesn't need to be left open, as rodents can enter the trap by pushing the door, but once inside, can't lift it back up.

    Place a small amount of bait in the upper chamber to entice rats to the trap, and place some more bait towards the back of the trap to entice them inside.
