Prodiamine for Lawns: When and How to Apply It

Prodiamine is a pre-emergent herbicide, which means its main job is to help prevent susceptible weeds from becoming established.

Rather than waiting until weeds are large enough to see, prodiamine works during the early stages of germination. It interferes with cell division and root development in susceptible young plants.

That makes it particularly useful for recurring weeds such as Summer Grass, Crabgrass, Crowsfoot and Winter Grass.

The important thing to understand is this: Prodiamine is primarily a prevention tool. It is not designed to remove mature weeds that are already growing throughout your lawn.

Timing is one of the most important parts of using prodiamine successfully. You want the treatment in place before your target weeds germinate.

For warm-season weeds such as Summer Grass and Crowsfoot, that often means planning your application in late winter or early spring, before soil temperatures rise enough to trigger germination.

Products such as Spartan Pre-Emergent Herbicide contain prodiamine and are designed specifically for preventative weed control in established turf.

If you wait until Summer Grass is already spreading through the lawn, you have missed the preventative window for those particular plants.

Generally, no.

This is one of the most common misunderstandings about pre-emergent herbicides. If a weed is already well established above the soil, prodiamine is not designed to make it disappear. At that stage, you may need a suitable post-emergent herbicide for the visible weeds. Prodiamine can then become part of your longer-term strategy for reducing the next generation.

So if you are looking at an established weed problem today, think of it this way:

Post-emergent = deal with what is growing now.

Prodiamine = help prevent what may germinate next.

After application, prodiamine needs to move into the upper soil layer where weed seeds germinate. That is why watering-in is such an important part of the process.

For liquid products, irrigation helps move the active ingredient from the grass leaves and soil surface into the zone where it needs to work.

Granular products work on the same principle. For example, Indigo ProForce Onset 10GR contains prodiamine in a granular format. You spread the granules evenly across established turf and then water them in.

One of the reasons prodiamine is popular is its residual activity. Certain prodiamine products can provide weed prevention for several months when applied correctly. However, that does not mean every application will perform identically.

Can I Seed Grass After Applying Prodiamine?

This is another important question. Prodiamine works by interfering with the development of newly germinating plants.

Unfortunately, it cannot tell the difference between a weed seed and the grass seed you actually want to grow. That means applying prodiamine immediately before overseeding or establishing new turf from seed can create problems. If you plan to seed your lawn, always check the product label for the required interval between treatment and seeding.

In general, prodiamine is much better suited to established turf.

Is Liquid or Granular Prodiamine Better?

Neither is automatically better.

A liquid product such as Spartan may suit someone who already owns spraying equipment and wants precise control over application.

A granular option such as Onset 10GR may be easier for someone who prefers using a lawn spreader.

The better option depends on your lawn size, equipment and preferred application method.

If the same grassy weeds return every year, prodiamine can help you move from reacting to weeds to preventing them.
